There are a lot of challenges facing parents today that are trying to raise their children. One prominent of those challenges, is the concern that parents have about how to make sure their kids don’t get sick. And by sickness, I don’t mean a common cold, which to some parents is enough to cause worrying and headaches that come with it. I mean sickness of a more serious nature. The answer is quite simple actually, but it takes a lot of work and discipline.
With our health system in the US being the way it is, savvy parents, more than ever understand the importance of teaching healthy eating habits to their kids. The health problems that adults face can be dramatically reduced if we start at an early age and teach children to eat healthy. Parents should not rely on the school lunch program to instill good eating habits to their kids. The studies are quite convincing that children who had a daily routine of having a cooked dinner and packed lunches in the morning are a lot more likely to maintain good eating habits. And it all starts with the fundamentals and the basics of health and nutrition.
What are the results of bad eating habits?
There are all kinds of illnesses and poor health conditions that are caused by poor eating habits, things like Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, immune-related diseases, and obesity are all primary results of very poor diet. As for the latter, obesity is an epidemic health condition among teens and adults in the US. According to the Center for Disease Control, 34% of adults are obese, more than double the rate 30 years ago. For children, obesity rates have tripled to 17% from the rate 30 years ago. African-American adults have the highest obesity rates- 37% among men and 50% among women. Hispanics adults have the second highest rate- 43% among women.
There are huge costs associated with obesity. According to the CDC, medical expenses related to obesity accounted for 9.1% of total US medical expenditures in 1998, amounting to close to $78.5 billion.
There are simple things that parents can do to make sure their children grow healthy and free from sickness. It starts with a low carb fruits and vegetables diet, consisting of essential fruits and vegetables, whole grains and good sources of protein. As for the latter part, it is important that parents get the right source for the proteins. It is also important for parents to stay on an alkaline based diet as well, for themselves and the kids. An alkaline based diet basically allows the body to detox itself from food residues and other chemicals that may remain in their system. This works to keep the immune system working at optimal levels.
To begin reversing the health epidemics and disease in the US, there has to be a concerted effort to focus on daily nutrition as a necessary lifestyle. This all begins with parents teaching healthy eating habits to their kids, by providing a daily routine for everyone in the family.
