They envision living with some autonomy from their parents and anticipate meeting new people and experiencing new things. However, sometimes experience turns into too much experimentation and autonomy develops into homesickness and depression.</p>
<p>Campus life is a huge transition for young people and has its own set of health risks. Below are the top 5 health risks for college students:</p>
<p>1. Sleep deprivation. Studies find that up to 20% of college students suffer from sleeping disorders. It is common for college students to experience altered sleeping patterns when they leave home for the dorms. Their new sleeping environment is complicated by unusual schedules, which fluctuate due to class schedules, social activities and work. Many students stay up late to cram for exams or party excessively. Sleep deprivation leads to increased irritability, anxiety and even weight gain.</p>
<p>Solution: The average adult should get between 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Experts suggest that exercise can help establish healthy sleeping patterns. It is recommended that a student exercise at least three hours before bedtime, never just before bedtime. If you cannot get a full night&#8217;s sleep on a regular basis the next best thing is to schedule &#8220;catch-up&#8221; nights a few days a week. Students should make a concentrated effort to get a block of sleep on these &#8220;catch-up&#8221; nights. This practice will help prevent long-term health issues.</p>
<p>2. Eating disorders. Gaining the freshman 10 or 15 is bad enough, but it won&#8217;t kill you. Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa are a different matter. Both conditions arise out of a need for control and acceptance. It is hard to estimate how prevalent the condition is on college campuses, but 10-20% of diagnosed cases will die from complications relating to eating disorders. When the pressures of college life are too great some young woman (less of a problem for male students) focus on calories and their weight in an effort to block out other problems. Eating disorders may be used as a way to express control when the rest of life seems out of control. Girls suffering from bulimia will eat to avoid feeling overwhelmed, lonely, sad, or depressed. When they purge, whether by vomiting or compulsively exercising, it helps them feel like they are releasing all those feelings and again gaining a sense of control.</p>
<p>Solution: Eating disorders are a serious problem that will require professional help. Most college and university campuses have a health center, which can get a student connected to the appropriate health professionals. If you suspect your roommate or friend to be struggling with this issue talk with them and be supportive and encourage them to seek professional help. Eating disorders have complex psychological backgrounds probably beyond your ability to correct, so supporting them to seek professional help might save your friends life.</p>
<p>3. Excessive partying: A rite of passage or just stupid behavior? Drugs and alcohol have always been a part of college campuses. An alarming trend is the increase in alcohol poisoning and alcohol related deaths. Overindulgence is too acceptable among college co-eds and the &#8220;party hard&#8221; culture is leading many students into trouble. An additional trend of mixing hard liquor with energy drinks is enabling students to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and achieving dangerous blood alcohol levels. This drunken behavior is characterized with aggressive and risk taking stunts. Access to high proof alcohol, a culture of binge drinking and artificial stimulants is a recipe for disaster. But sex doesn&#8217;t happen in a vacuum and it has obvious physical consequences. Shockingly for this generation of &#8220;sex savy&#8221; students the emotional fallout comes as a big surprise. When two people open their bodies to each other, they make themselves vulnerable in unexpected and unimaginable ways that can lead to an emotional hangover. Most college age students have been getting the &#8220;safe sex&#8221; talk since elementary school but with the introduction of alcohol or drugs it is lost in the heat of the moment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) estimate 19 million new STD infections each year. 50% of these are among young people 15-24 years of age. Most infections have no symptoms and often go undiagnosed and untreated. For women this can lead to severe health consequences, including sterility.</p>
<p>Solution: practice safe sex and don&#8217;t drink to the point that you engage in risky behavior. Limiting the influence of drugs and alcohol may prevent you from making unwise sex decisions and reduce risky behavior, which includes unprotected sex with unfamiliar partners. If you have acted rashly or done anything that puts you at risk of infection, get tested. Testing allows you to get any needed treatment and to prevent the spread of any possible non-symptomatic infections.</p>
<p>5. Emotional issues. The average college student&#8217;s life style is a ripe breeding ground for emotional triggers. Students experience many firsts when they enter college: new living arrangements, friends, roommates, food, managing money and a healthy dose of uncertainty. For most the transition is smooth, but for some they can lose their way and feel disoriented. A previously confident self-assured student can suddenly question who they are and agonize over simple decisions. This can lead to stress, anxiety and depression. Many turn to drugs and alcohol to &#8220;numb the pain&#8221; and some become isolated and might have suicidal ideations. <p>Osteoporosis (meaning &#8220;porous bones&#8221;) is a condition where bone tissue loses its density, over a period of time, resulting in weakness and an increased risk of fracture. These risks can be reduced with lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation and exercise programs designed to strengthen bone, improve equilibrium and prevent falls. But if your osteoporosis is advanced and you are currently under the care of a western physician, more than likely you have been given a prescription for a bisphosphonate drug such as Fosamax® or Boniva® to artificially increase the density of your bones. These drugs have been the treatment of choice since the mid 1990&#8242;s. However, as with all apparently good things, it pays to follow the latest research studies that actually test the effectiveness and safety of the drugs you use over the long term.</p>
<p>Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have exposed a significant link between the long-term use of Fosamax® and unusual transverse fractures of the thigh bone, indicating that prolonged therapy with these drugs tends to weaken bone integrity rather than strengthening it. What occurs in diverticulitis is the development of small bulging pouches, known as &#8220;diverticulitis&#8221; within the intestinal wall. These diverticula become inflamed or possibly even infected. Symptoms can be very mild or quite severe depending on a number of factors. Some symptoms may be pain in the lower left abdomen, diarrhea, constipation, fever and nausea. It is believed that the reason why this disease is more prevalent in western nations is due to our lack of dietary fiber in our daily diet. Additionally our heavy reliance on processed foods has made us more susceptible to this condition. We need to begin to incorporate healthy dietary changes to avoid the development of such diseases to begin with. Diverticulitis can weaken the colon and result in further health issues.</p>
<p>Dietary Changes to Help This Condition: The perfect diet for diverticulitis is one which includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, wholesome beans and other fiber rich foods. Increasing your intake of dietary fiber is one of the most important things you can do. Do this gradually because if you add too much fiber too quickly, you can experience gas and bloating. Over a period of several weeks, gradually increase your fiber intake. Try to completely eliminate all processed foods from your diet. You can eat it as a piece of fresh fruit or mix it into a delicious smoothie or add it to a salad. Begin exercising. Simple yet effective exercises may include walking or moderate swimming. Movement will help your colon to become stronger and will help you to achieve better bowel movements as well. Cut down or eliminate alcohol and tobacco products. These substances are irritating to the digestive tract and can further aggravate the condition.</p>
<p>Sample Meal Ideas: Breakfast could be a delicious smoothie with plenty of added fiber. Make a smoothie with fruit that includes a banana, a peach or papaya. After all, they have a lot of money and should be able to insure anyone at great rates. For some people (particularly the self employed), these statements are simply non-sense. Believe it or not, some people do feel that they are entitled to the lowest rates, even if they have or have had a preexisting medical condition (some may even use colorful language to convey their disagreement with insurance companies making a profit).</p>
<p>There is one fact that you should never forget, insurance companies are in the business of making a profit. After all, if they were to go bankrupt because of careless business practices, then everyone would loose (yes, even if the government bells them out!). Offering life Insurance to people is just one way they try to make that profit. So, another fact is, if you have a health condition because you were accidentally exposed to some toxins or because you lived a careless life, insurance companies are not going to treat you any better that you may have treated your own body (which is the only thing they are insuring). In light of that, although, you may not get preferred rates, having a preexisting condition, still does not have to mean paying outrageous prices or being declined for life insurance.</p>
<p>Now, different preexisting conditions affect your chances of good rate and approval differently. Here are some of the most common examples and some tips for each</p>
<p>    * Diabetes &#8211; Diabetes can be considered as very mild, mild or advanced. In mild cases a preferred approval may even be possible. If all you do to control your diabetes is take a pill or avoid certain foods, then your outlook is very good. If you take insulin shots, getting a good rate or even getting approved may be more difficult. Another major issue with diabetes is if you have had other medical issues such as a heart attack. Multiple medical issues with diabetes can often lead to a decline or just a very limited type of available plans. One more important thing, if your diabetes has been newly diagnosed or it has not been controlled for more than a year, a decline is also very possible.<br />
    * Heart conditions &#8211; most heart related conditions are improvable as long as you are still active and not confined to a nursing home or other rehab center. This preexisting condition, will affect your ability to get life insurance depending mostly on the date of your last heart medical issue and the extent of the heart issue. Another factor that may affect your ability to get life insurance and get good rates is the type of treatment that you needed in order to bring you back to health. Some insurance companies may also consider the type of medicine and how many types of medicines you take.<br />
    * Cancer &#8211; This medical condition is a more complicated as there are so many types and sub-types of cancers. Simply, two main factors will affect your ability to life insurance. The fist one is, the date that the cancer was last treated (not just diagnosed) and the second is the type of cancer you had. if the type of cancer you had was easily treated with a simple surgery, then it is possible that you will qualify for life insurance as soon as six months after treatment. If the cancer you were diagnosed with, required more extensive treatment such as chemo, then the minimum wait is usually five years to ten years, before an insurance company would even consider offering you any life insurance. As we said, cancer is a very complicated disease and thus every case is regarded more specifically than other diseases. </p>
<p>Many other preexisting health conditions will affect your ability to get life insurance, but we thought we would cover the main ones. In all situations, if you have a preexisting condition, control and personal interest in your health is of top importance. Although, they may have same name (cancer is cancer!) every preexisting condition needs to be considered on its own. And, just because one company declined you does not mean that they will all decline you. Also, some companies have a better understanding of certain medical conditions and their effects on your longevity. Make sure to shop around and get multiple quotes from advisors who have a good knowledge of the impaired health market. Choosing the right broker could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. One other condition we would like to briefly mention is AIDS. We do not fully understand why, but AIDS, HIV or any related diseases are not, as of this writing, insurable with any companies that ask medical questions. If you have this preexisting health issue, the only plans that seem available are no health questions life insurance plans and accident only life insurance.</p>
